I'm wanting to get my other half a turbo trainer for his birthday. I'm just getting back into cycling myself after quite a few years so I'm not really sure what's out there. He commutes daily so clocks up over 3500 miles a year but wants to put his spare bike in the conservatory to train more over winter. They had one in halfords for about £170 which looked ok, but not really sure what I'm looking for. Any advice please??

I use a tacx flow. i chose it after lots of investigation. The main reason I settled on it is the use of the elctromag brake and it has a the ability to set resistance in terms of energy/power as opposed just speed/resistance.

what this means is that its more like actual riding. When you ride you reach a speed where the pedalling gets easier as you maintain your speed (until you find a hill or a headwind) the tacx flow mimicks this and allows you to set a level of power that you wish to output as apposed speed/resistance. Once yopu hit that power setting the brake eases off a little and you can just cruise along, as you drop the power you need to work twice as hard to then catch up...just like on the road.

If you set it to limit by speed/resistance you always feel a little like you are on a treadmill, working against a constant grind...its dull and lifeless.

plus the tacx allows output/input from external DVDs (so you can set the laptop up and ride the alps)

If you want him to keep using it rather than throw it in the back of the cupboard after the first few sessions, then you need to splash the cash and go VR.

Johny Jeez, I'm thinking of buying the flow multiplayer, I'm just worried about the amount of resistance it gives. Can you get a proper leg burning workout on it

Would you recommend one?

I got this one and have been quite happy with it. Because it is not magnetic, I can use my standard trip on it without issues (the cyclocomputer is a cadence one which fits to the rear wheel and non-magnetic trainers won't interfere with it). I added in the front wheel support as well which works really well. http://www.wiggle.co.uk/elite-crono-fluid-elastogel-trainer/ down at £139.99 instead of £199.99 at the moment.

It is amazingly quiet - that is something that has surprised me. the resistance is 'odd' in that it just seems to work it out and the faster you go the harder the resistance, if it is too much, I just drop down a gear which works really well. I can get a really good work out from it. But it does not come with a computer etc, I just use the bike's one for that. Adding in the computer adds way too much to the cost £150 at the moment I think!

Wiggle had one of those Elite trainers reduced to under £100 the other day, i was hoping it would still be there on pay day.
Also a very quick question, dont want to derail, but is a big fan needed if training outdoors under an awning?

what's the fan for? keeping you cool? I've been using one in the sitting room, tried claiming a 20mile ride into a headwind the other day but my OH would not have any of it - says the headwind does not count on a turbo trainer!

Edit: the turbo trainer does not require one....
