I'm looking for a touing bike with a budget of about 1k, I do long day rides most weekends but also tours of several weeks camping, but I've never bought a good bike before and am a bit bewildered by all the makes and models... I'm also not sure how to chose the right frame size, I'm prone to back pain so it's quite important that I can find a position that's comfortable for long periods. My bike at the moment is quite upright, so when I sit on a tourer with drops I'm not too sure what to look out for as it feels so weird.

Any ideas?

I have a Specialised Secteur Elite (2010 version). It is a more relaxed/upright riding position and might suit your needs. I think the 2011 version is just under the £1,000 mark. I use mine for the daily 16 miles round trip commute and longer 40/50 mile rides on Sundays and find it very comfortable (not an aggressive riding position).

Some good suggestions from craigwend. I have the ridgeback voyage 2011 and I'm very happy with it. The 2010 model is basically identical and a very good buy at £660, but the panorama is a better spec and a steal for under £1000. If the dawes galaxy fits you and you can collect, then £850 is very good indeed.

Spa Cycles will ship it to you.
