About to buy new bike under cyclescheme. Went to size up the Uncle John today. They've just brought out two new stunning offers. Uncle John or Kaffenback with SRAM RED for £999.

So... Alu frame cyclotrons with carbon forks or Steel all rounder?

Most riding is roads to work, bike routes, old rail tracks etc. Both offer panniers and mudguards. Only difference is material and weight, not a lot of weight different.

Steel vs Alu - what is key difference?

Darn spellchecker. For cyclotrons read cyclocross

On the usage you describe, I personally would go for steel - but either would work.

I like the Kaffenback. It's been around a while and has a happy and loyal following and a good reputation. I considered getting one 6 odd years ago as an audax bike.

I've got an On-One pompino for similar use. Vey comfy so I'd vote steel.
Dunno if theres actually a massive amount of difference between a Kaffenback and Pompino apart from the seatstays.

Does my weight affect the choice? I'm over 15st right now, on it's way down and aiming to settle around 14.

Just get the one you like the look of. Probably not much in it when it comes to quality of ride. I'd have thought that the weight of the alu frame and carbon fork would be a fair bit less than the all steel Kaffenback - there's about 300g difference in frame weight alone so I'd have thought the Uncle John would be a good 0.5kg lighter.

Yes think that's about right. I went for the UJ - just waiting for my c2w voucher now.
