What type of surface/terrain will you be riding on? This has a great bearing on which type of machine you should get?

Not a real answer to your question but...

My wife has a 5 year old Discovery 201, a much cheaper bike than the 401 and less 'sporty'. It's a great bike! I rode it home from the dealer for her as she was not dressed for cycling the day she implse bought it! I had a Thorn Club Tour at the time and was very pleasantly surprised at how well it rode.

they both look like great bikes. Sounds as if disc brakes may be a bit of overkill for what you have in mind. Also do you need a front suspension? for light road park riding most people dont find that they are necessary. Try to get out to a few bike shops, try some out and ask em loads of questions.
But if you by either of those two i think you'll do alright.
