Hi there...1st post, so please dont be too harsh!
Have a chance to join the companies cyclesolutions scheme and get a 'tax discounted' new bike for work, but cant decide if spending upto £1000 on a new bike is what I should be doing?..signing up to this, or getting my old MTB repaired?
I currently own an old Claud Butler Ravaner MTB(which is about 10 years old)and has seen better days! LBS has estimated repairs to bike at £170...and to include 2xnew tyres, new BB, 7 speed cassette, 7 speed chain, brake blocks and cables..!
Now I know I can get 2 x new 'slick' tyres for around £15, fit the brake blocks myself...and there is a little 'play' in the crank at the bottom bracket(but doesnt affect my riding, no slipped chain(yet))...but not sure if it really needs new BB, cassette n chain, etc...?
Now my commute to work only takes me 20 minutes by MTB, and I know by changing the tyres to 'slicks' may improve that slightly...
Now as I would be saving around 40% on the cost of a new bike(with a final £15+vat after 4 years), would I be stupid NOT to get a new bike...or stupid TO get a new bike and only get my MTB repaired when the chain starts slipping, and bits fall off?(I love my 'old faithful' and would hate to see her die,but dont want to keep her if shes gonna start costing me megabucks!
And if I would be stupid NOT to get a new bike, is a GIANT SEEK 1 any good?
Regards...
