Depends where you live but I would go for a Robin box or a Tit box. Tits nest all around our place.

I would agree with a blue/great tit box. We get nesting pairs in our 2 every year without fail You need to put them up asap though as the blue tits are already in and out of ours house-hunting.

As Slowgrind says, it does depend on which kind of bird you're able to attract. I haven't seen a sparrow round these parts for years now but if you do they should be encouraged as they're a declining species.

Yes - ours isn't high enough though I think. We've had 'visits' 2 years running now, but no nests and I'm sure it's due to it being too low (only about 8 ft off the ground) I've been meaning to shift it higher for a while. Next time I have the ladders out...

This is from the BBC wildlife site,

Between 1977 and 2000, house sparrow (Passer domesticus) numbers in the UK declined by 65%.

In London they have almost completely disappeared from the central Royal Parks and most notably in Kensington Palace Gardens numbers fell from around 2,500 in the 1920s to just eight in 2001.

You're bucking the trend Ian!

I'm hoping to get an owl nesting box up this year as there are a few owls around here, mainly barn owls, but tawny & long eared have been spotted too. It depends where you are & what you want to attract ;)

You must have unusually shy birds. Our nesting box was mounted on the side of the garage and was, at most, 7 feet off the ground. A friend of mine,s nest box is about five feet off the ground and has hosted a nesting pair every year for the past four or five years.

Blue tits nest in the wall cavity of our house if I let them. There is a broken bit of pointing between the outside skin of brickwork and the door frame that they can easily pop in and out of. Robins get in to the shed at the bottom of the garden, making a nest in any available container.
