As I know nothing about CX bikes....

Pinnacle Expede 0.0 fitted with Tektro Oryx canti's. Brakes are awful, pad upgrade looks like a route to sanity.

Which kool stop pad will fit in those Tektro metal shoes?

Better off replacing the whole shoe/pad combination with kool stops own CX shoe+pad?

Thoughts.....

Cantis always used to take the pads with a unthreaded metal post..... Koolstop call them Eagle 2 IIRC (but beware there is a threaded and unthreaded version)

but but but - from the pics on the CRC website, it looks like V-brake style pads on the Oryx

Yes, that's right. Get the v-brake ones.
These ones would be ideal for Oryxs.

Don't expect much better performance though - those brakes are good when and only when they are set up right!

I went to a Tetro 720 on the back as Oryx wasn't powerful enough no matter what pads I used. My new Cx'er will have Froglegs... if I ever get round to bulding it up.

It is my boss's bike. The first ride I did with him he complained about the brakes. The lever goes all the way back to the bar! I prodded, gently, the offside brake pad which looked too low, and it rotated through 90 degrees. Well done Evans.

He says he has had a fiddle. Not sure he knows what he is doing so what is the lowdown on getting them set up correctly?

There's a good thread on the CTC forum which I will find when I have some time!

Greg, if they're like my Oryx, you'll want the "XT type" slide in pads. Go for "Extreme" (the equivalent of Kool Stop Salmon) or dual compound, at least.

Junk the included link wire[1], it's pants.

Get a proper canti straddle (I like the triangle type that come with Tekro CR720s, they should be available as an after market part).

Set the straddle fairly low - on my LHT, the clamp bolt for the brake wire is about level with the lower headset cup.

It's a good idea to put an inline adjuster somewhere in the setup, as the high mechanical advantage necessitates the blocks being pretty close to the wheel rim, ime.

I tried CR720s - I like the ease of setup, but with Tiagra STis I just couldn't get the power I wanted from them. The Oryx require more fiddling, but are way more powerful on my bike.

EDIT:
Pads (although my LBS does these for £6)
Straddle

[1] By which I mean, of course, put it in the bits box on the offchance.

They are not brilliant but I've got Oryxs on my bike and with some decent v-brake pads they seem to work well enough, even with the combined weight of me and the panners loaded on them.

I've currently got some cartridge holders and I think Ashima pads on mine and they are much better than the OEM pads
