I currently have a Trek mountain bike bought way back in 1999. It is heavy. Hadn't seen much use until we moved to Cambridge a couple of years ago.

I'm starting a new job soon and will have a commute of about 5 miles each way. Tossing up between going by motorbike, car or bicycle. Yes I know which one will get the vote on here!

If it were casual clothes the bicycle would be the obvious choice but I expect I will have to wear suits and that makes it a bit more difficult.

I'm thinking that if I go by bicycle then a proper hybrid bike with full mudguards and panniers would make it easier (and hopefully with a good, light bike a bit easier).

Should I go for a new bike? If so, what hybrid would you recommend (there is a local Giant dealer and their hybrid the Rapid looks okay but I know nothing about bikes - at least not about those without engines!!)

When I commute by bike I don't wear my suit - I keep it at work together with a pair of smart shoes. I then take a clean shirt and change of socks in my bag. Cannot really give any advice on specific bikes but I would say a decent hybrid is going to make your ride faster and easier.
