Hi
I am going for a ride with a club on Tuesday night, it will be my first ride and I need ( and want) to buy a helmet.

Can anyone recommend a good make please?

Thanks xxx

Go and try a few on somewhere like decathlon that has a large range or some other LBS. Buy the cheapest one that you think is comfortable.

There are many good makes to choose from, but shapes and sizes tend to vary between manufacturers. Popular choices include Giro, Bell, Met, Specialized...
As a minimum, make sure that any helmet that you buy meets the appropriate CE safety certification.
Go and try plenty on, and find one that suits the shape of your head. Some people have narrower, more oval heads, some people have more circular heads, some people are somewhere in-between. Personally, I get on well with Met helmets, but not Specialized ones.
Take time to adjust all the straps correctly and make sure that it is sitting properly on your head. A good bike shop should be able to take time and care to give you the right advice and make sure your new helmet is correctly fitted. Whereabouts do you live? Folk on here might be able to recommend a good shop local to you.

Go and try a load on, they all vary so much,
I wear a Specialized s-works 2D.
It fits me great and has good ventilation.

Alan.

Hi Cackle

Just phoned the bike shop and the helmets start at 30 pounds

Which isnt a lot but I have other stuff to buy too.

I have to get lights and innertube and a bike pump so I may try the Moreton shop, my cousin lives in Moreton so I can call in and see him too lol

Thanks xxx

If you're on a budget, places like big Tescos/Sainsbury's sell bike gear, including helmets. Upton Sainsbury's is one and the big Tesco by B&Q just off jct 1 of the M53. Also don't rule out Halfords for helmets, they are worth a look. Wouldn't go there for bike advice but I'd be quite happy to buy accessories from them.

Also in future, Aldi and Lidl do bike gear offers. Aldi must be due one soon actually, keep an eye open. Someone normally announces it here as well.

I signed up to Aldi and Lidl's newsletter lol

They send them out a few times a week with their offers.

I will try Tesco's in Bidston, thanks xxx

The advice on Comfort and fit is sound, but it depends upon why you are buying a helmet!

Cost is not a factor in efficiency, any helmet on sale in the UK can pass the basic EN1078 tests, but the price range is wide.

Equally there are helmets at the "top of the range" that only pass EN1078

The test considere to be the most rigorous and demanding is the Snell B90 or B95, and if you are serious about the protection then you should look for a helmet that passes this test. CAn be as little as £25 or asmuch as £100

+1 Halfords. I don't normally buy at Halfords but keep them on the edge of the radar. My last one was from a Decathlon in France - a huge range and really cheap. Anyway I was toying with buying a new one last year. Wasn't particularly looking for one in Halfords, but they happened to have a sale on all cycling accessories. I saw this Giro Helmet it must have been their top one. They reduced it down by well over 50% from about £55. Haggled a bit, in a friendly way, and ended up paying a shade over £21.00. It is well comfortable has an adjustable cage inside which fixes to size/shape of your head, as well as the usual chins straps plus rain peak to stop water flooding your face ;). Spare set of pads as well.
