Which Gillet?

I did a 3 hour ride yesterday - when I got to my destination (Lyme Park) and sat down for my jam butty, I thought to myself that most of my ride so far had been uphill, and that the ride back would be easy in comparison... it was - but because I didnt have to put so much effort in I was 'cold to the bone' when I got home.

I think a gillet would have helped so its the next thing on the shopping list.

I guess about £50 max - can anyone give any tips for a good-un

TIA. Neil

£50?

It's the easiest question I've seen on here for weeks and you don't need to go anywhere near £50 to get one of these.

Some arm warmers might also help. I bought both gilet and arm warmers about 18 months ago and they are in my saddle pack for every ride - unless I'm wearing them. ^_^

I have the Tenn gillet and it is very good, the only slightly negative comment I would make is that the fit is a little on the baggy side. So great for every day riding, but if you are a racing snake on a club run you might find the fit a little generous. Value wise an excellent option.

It's a fair point, which I didn't comment upon as I'm a long way from being a racing snake. That there is a 4XL option might also be a clue to that.:giggle:

My 3XL gilet is a generous fit, although I like that as it allows me to wear it over whatever I'm wearing. I must admit that I would have expected the smaller size to be, well, smaller in the body width as there's not much else that they can change, what with there being no arms or anything.

I love (really really love) the Tenn jerseys made with coffee beans, so have no hesitation in trying thier gillet.
Have you tried their Windblock windproof jacket? I say that because it sounds like you are copying the rest of my cycling wardrobe, so you might as well get one of those when you're placing an order.

Another +1 for the tenn, as others have said they are a generous fit, if on a fast ride i would go for a size smaller as the medium i got at xmas fits but would be to flappy for a chain gang.
Add some arm warmers and you should be sorted, push come to shove you can always have a windproof in a back pocket if you get really cold or as i do bung it in the saddle bag.

I carry my Endura Cycle Chat gillet in my pocket all the time, I like what protection to storage weight/size it offers. I think my Endura laser gillet is slightly more robust but I prefer the cycle chat one, as previously mentioned and it fits better. The only negative in my Gillets is they don't have rear pockets.

OT, Don't wear a bright yellow jersey under it

I have a thing against bright yellow jerseys. I have proof (almost) that insects are more attracted to a cyclist dressed in yellow than any other colour. Foolishly, even knowing this, in early spring last year I set off on a ride wearing a bright yellow top, and within minutes had been hit plumb in the solar plexus by a bumble-bee that was the size of a small goat. It nearly killed me, and ive never worn yellow again.

Ta again for the tips, its now in the post heading my way

OT but following this one a bit ...

I've heard this too - and have you noticed what colour clothing attracts flies etc when hanging out on the washing line to dry ? My limited experience/unscientific tests tend towards confirming this theory.

ps. there is a clue .... ^_^
