Hi,

Been cycling 6 months and am ready to make the move to clip less!

Which system would be best for a beginner and any recommendations on pedals (don't want to spend a lot).

Currently just doing training rides but plan to commute.

I would strongly recommend spd as they are imo easy to clip into and more importantly out of, add to that you can adjust the spring tension of the clips to suit yourself.
The spd cleats are easy to walk on when you need to take a pee break or walk up a steep hill.

I have a pair of used shimano spd 520 pedals for sale in very nice condition if you are interested.

SPD.

Get SH-56 multirelease cleats (they came with M324 pedals). I've never had a clipless moment. When I first got them, I saw a car and panicked. How do I stop? Before I realised it my foot was free, and on the ground. Never unclipped if I didn't want to, never failed to unclip when I did want to - even when I couldn't remember how to do it.

These SPD pedals are inexpensive and easy to clip in and out. The SPD cleats are metal so last for years and they are also recessed into the sole of the shoe making walking much easier (cafe stops etc).

Shimano a530 are duel sided, flat one side and clip the other so they are great for beginners or commuting where you are in and out of the pedal all the time.

I have only recently gone down the route of clipless and using these along with a pair of mtb shoes is perfect not had any issues with clipping in or out on the loosest setting, plus walking in the shoes is a doddle as the cleat sits in the recess as opposed to spdsl set ups.

And if you really do struggle as others have mentioned shimano do a multi angle relate set of cleats which make it even easier to release from.

Other two bolt cleat systems are available...

also available in orange
I've always used SPD's for all my bikes as it's just easier. But might be worth looking at shoes that can take both fittings for cleats (Shimano do a number of models) so you can change if you decide one isn't for you.

Ones that fit you. There is dark magic at play with the sizing of cycling shoes

Go to shop or use a company with free returns and buy loads of pairs to try
