Hi I'm looking to replace a worn 50t outer chainring on a Tiagra compact - I could just source a straight swap with a Shimano replacement but I've been looking at the Stronglight and TA alternatives - does anyone have any experience of these chainrings and which would be best?

I use Stronglights, nowt wrong with them, last well, but there are slight drawbacks...
If you've a nice looking chainset, especially a black one, the silver Stronglights look slightly out of place. Ok, but just not the same.
Dural is their cheaper range (the ones i use), they also do Zircal, better quality.
Also, there is little or no ramping (IIRC) on the chainrings, so shifting may not be as crisp compared to OEM ones.

Eh ? Stronglight make some of the best on the market and the finish on some are out of this world on the mid to top range.

Not sure what you mean ? As above, even the cheap range with stronglight are flawless. Or am I missing something ?

Id pick Stronglight over Shimano all day long as would many others. A true French classic company thats been around long since the japs even seen a bicycle

Edit. The OP has a 'Tiagra'

Yes they do make some of the best...thats why i said...'nowt wrong with them'.
Finish on them is good...i didnt say it wasnt...simply it will probably not match the existing design or colour(unless you have plain silver chainrings already)
Thats based on fitting Durals to a FSA crankset, works as it should, but lost some of the nice looking graphics. Its a compromise.

Shifting ? IIRC, my Dural chainrings have no ramping aids. The originals did. Shifting is fine, but sometimes not flawless..i do wonder if the lack of ramping isnt helping. I may be wrong, i may be right, simply letting OP know my experiences.

You sound a bit uptight ....

Ah Yeah.

Sorry about that. I did come across as a bit aggressive in my tone, It wasn't intentional. I got the wrong impression on your answer

Yep. Iam uptight at the moment. Amazing how it shows up :/

Best / Thanks

I replaced a bent big ring on my commuter with a black Stronglight something or other, and I replaced both silver rings on my CAAD with stealthy black Stronglight CT2's to compliment the crank arms:wub: .
Very happy with them all thus far
Bought my big ring from my LBS, £27 IIRC, and I bought my CT2's from that online place that I think is in France, or Belgium maybe, it's got a lot XXX's in it's name but I can't freakin' remember what it is. Anyhoo they were by far the cheapest for CT2 rings at the time:thumbsup:
