Which chain

A 'friend' of mine has tasked me with getting an old mountain bike back on the road. I have stripped and cleaned the Shimano gear system, seems ok but the chain is totally shot. My question is how do I get the right one? On the chain it says SRAM PC59 G3 is this the information I need I split the chain OK I assume a new chain comes complete with the joining rivet or can I get one with a split link? This bike will never be used off road so would it be best to get rid of the knobbly tyres?

Any 9 speed chain will work, but I prefer KMC, which comes with a quick link.
