Which chain wear measuring tool?

The Shimano one measures wear properly but is quite expensive.

This is the only correct chain checker as it calibrates from the centre

I assume it's not allowed to do what the old guy at my LBS does, pull the chain off the front of the large chainring and make a call depending on how much gap there is???

How accurate does it really need to be? Unless you feel the need to replace your chain after an exact amount of wear, the expensive tools are giving precision you don't need.

Plenty of ways of checking a chain. Some go of distance in miles the bike chain has done . Some use a 12" steel rule. Some use a chain checker .

Doing this can get you 3 + chains out of one block

Doing it correctly can get you a lot more chains out of a block.

Im still working out if its cost effective though :smile:
