Hi,

Bit of a simple question but I'm new to repairing bikes and am trying to put a new set of gears on. I currently have a Shimano TZ31, 7 Speed, 14-34t cassette and want to know which lockring to get to undo it - I know it's a freewheel but still doesn't seem entirely obvious which one is right e.g. Cyclo freewheel remover shimano UG fit looks likely, but then don't think mine is uniglide, or screw on, or something. All clarification appreciated, ta.

You just need a standard Shimano compatible freewheel remover like this; Link (probably the one you've been looking at). Forget about lockrings - with a freewheel the whole gear cluster unscrews from the hub. Sheldon Brown has a useful guide to the differences between freewheels and cassettes here.

The freewheel will be extremely tight so you'll need a long wrench and an appropriate socket to fit the freewheel tool. I usually use an extending wheel nut wrench for this job which seems to work well.

An assistant is also very helpful to hold the wheel steady while you pull hard on the wrench. It can be done single handed but is slightly more fiddly.

Purchase a 1 ton vice, bolt to kitchen worktop.

I am sure the wife won't mind.

That would make it easy. I don't have a vice. Want a proper workshop.
Purchase a 1 ton vice, bolt to kitchen worktop.
Have vice, have wrench, have correct freewheel tool. Couldn't get freewheel out with wrench, bolted vice to kitchen worktop, still could not manage.
Took wheel to lbs, one instant with his wrench, the thing is out
Now: got cone spanner but, guess what?
