Feel the need to upgrade, ive never really been happy with the trekos that came with my boardmans even with koolstop pads.

CRC have SRAM Force brakeset from 2009 for £80 they also have the Rival Brakeset for £80.... which would be better?? over 3 years will the tech that went into the force brakes have changed much??

Could I get a better breakset for my money else where? Are these any good from planet x?

Thanks

The planetX ones look much more sexier IMHO

Top Tip - change the cable outers for gear cable outers, there is a lot less compression in the gear outers so more of the force at brake lever is passed onto the caliper .

A complete Goodridge cable set will completely transform your current braking system, but any gear cable outers will improve things a lot.

Along with the Koolstops, I think you'll be more than covered in the braking department.

If you are still not happy, get some disk brakes.

I dont particularly rate the looks of the planet x, but if they live up to planet x's hype then id be willing to take a punt....

2Loose - I did consider replacing the cables but wasn't actually sure if they would make much of a difference... the Gore cables get good reviews but they are pretty expensive...but then again it would be cheaper than buying a new set of brakes for £80... my boardmans comes with basic shimano SIS cable, apparently thats entry level/cheap stuff?? its seems to operate the gears well enough though.. no complaints there hence the reason for thinking a more expensive set might not really make a difference!?!?

I meant replace the current brake cable outer with ones normally used for gear cables. Cheap gear outers used in this way give far less spongy brakes than 'standard' cheap brake cable outers.

Obviously some top brand outers like goodridge would be better, but normal brake outers have a steel helix inside which 'gives' a bit when you pull on the brake, whereas gear cables are designed to stop this to keep your gear indexing sweet.

I dont think you can go wrong with Shimano 105 5600 calipers and Swisstop FlashPro pads. Excellent braking.

Blimey checked the prices for the above and comes to £100!

Dang those Planet-X creations are fugly.

I reckon I might try replacing the cable first. In the past few rides the rear brake just feels useless, there is plenty life in the pads but they just dont seem to bite enough, even squeezing the leaver don't feel right?? I had the bike serviced not long ago as well, unless if the mechanic had been fiddling with it I can't think what else it could be? I've tried basic adjustments myself but it was never this bad to begin with.
