Which Bike?

Hi guys

I'm a roadie who has seen the light and now want to buy a XC bike to fulfill my muddy desires.

I've had a wee scan around the net but am not really sure what the best buy is. Anybody had any experience with the Focus Thunder? http://www.wiggle.co.uk/focus-thunder-30-2010/

They do some cracking deals with road bikes, I wondered if this was true for off road also.

I've got about a grand to spend, and i'll be using the bike for some fairly rough stuff, starting with the Strathpuffer.

Should I spend my grand on a middling XC or on a better hard tail?

I second a better HT over the Thunder. Not a bad looking bike, but some of the components seem to be on the cheap side to keep the cost down, like the forks.

On the same site the Felt Six Elite 2010 looks like steal, also the Focus Black Forest 4.0 XT looks pretty good.

Suntour forks on a bike with a supposed 1500 RRP is a bit of an eye-opener.

I would go for a hardtail, but if your local riding is quite rough, then maybe look towards the lower-end Specialised full suspension bikes.
