i'm looking to get back into cycling but on a very limited budget ..... been looking at the carrera subway models or a claude butler urban 100
any views either way would be very much appreciated!

Carrera subway is probably a better buy, but get the one you feel more comfortable on.

I know you say you have a limited budget but........ you've picked possibly the two worst brands out there!

How much are you looking to spend?

Specialized were selling Globe Vienna 1's a while back for £199 - absolute bargain commuter hydrid bike at that price! And the Vienna 3's were down to £299.

I couldn't disagree more. CB are ok -living off their name and not as good as they used to be, but the Subway is the mainstay commuter starter bike. One of the few decent bikes to come out of Halfords before Boardman came along. Isla Rowntree worked on it in the early days. The wife has had one for a few days and I'd mightily recommend it as a cheap commuter.

Isla should stick to winning races. They are both examples of very cheap mass production in China. The budget Specialized bikes are produced in Taiwan with a noticable step up in the build quality.

The CB name has been owned by Falcon for 20+ years now. Perhaps many years ago they had a decent name but.......Falcon are incapable of making a decent bike.

I have two bikes, one is a carrera virtuoso road bike, which is the one I use when I know I'm going to have to leave the bike locked up outdoors somewhere, it's not bad, not quite as much fun as my other bike, mostly due to the cheaper components that make the bike, but it's not awful!

Search "subway" on here and you'll see how well regarded they are.

I'll second you, the Subway is a fine animal and a perfect all-round starter bike.
