I have a Garmin Vista CX and MetroGuide Europe (software with street detailed mapping), We have been on a couple of France tours and found it compact and easy to use. has similar facilities to a lot of car Sat-Navs. Also take a look at the SatMap Active 10, by brother in law has one, he has purchased the OS mapping SD cards for it, he thinks it's great.
I hope you find one you like.
Cheers

I have the Garmin Vista HCx and it's a very good unit. It's very complex, especially when you're trying to get to grips with traklogs & memory map software at the same time but it's very powerful, verstaile and has a ridiculously long runtime on 2 X AA's.

Etrex Vista HCx or Legend HCx and City Navigator maps are best for touring.
(Vista has altimeter/compass, Legend doesn't - only of any relevance if you are interested in getting reasonably accurate gradients or amount of climbing).
The Edge 605/705 is smaller and neater, but is primarily aimed at training rather than navigation, and it's got a battery life of 8-10 hours, after which you need mains for recharging it (difficult when camping).

City Navigator maps are cheaper on SD card than on DVD, but you can't use them on the PC for planning or reviewing rides, and you can't copy them so there's no backup.
