Where to get new wheels from?

Hi,

I've been advised by the bike shop to replace the wheels on my bike the last 3 times I've taken it in - I thought I'd have to bite the bullet the other day when my back wheel broke, but they managed to fix it up instead with the advice, again, that it probably wouldn't last long and I'd need new wheels.

So, I think the message is that my bike needs new wheels in the near future! The old ones haven't broken yet but they're pretty ropey both structurally what with the spokes/axel being very ancient, and the tyres themselves being worn on the rim (although the tread is still good).

The guy in the shop suggested that I could save some money if I bought my own tyres, which would be fantastic, and then I'd only have to pay the labour fee to have them fitted plus not be charged over the odds for a fancy tyre when I could just have a bog standard one. However I'm not sure where to get the tyres from - what sort, which part of the wheel you are measuring when you get the size, what width of wheel to go for... and so on!

The bike is an old Dawes Shadow road bike and I basically just want some cheap but reliable wheels.

Any advice much appreciated!
