Where to get cottered chainset?

The Raleigh Merlin restoration has ground to a halt.

I bought http://www.amazon.co.uk/Sports-Cott...8&qid=1459198849&sr=8-1&keywords=46t+cottered last week and tried ftting today.

The castings are uneven, the left crank couldn't accept a cotterpin as the hole wasn't straight, and the chainwheel wandered side to side by over 5mm when it turned. Needless to say it's going back.

Can anyone point me towards a cottered 46T with quality I can count on?

A search for "Cottered crank" on eBay will dig some up - just watch crank length as some are 150mm.

If the original owner had been able to afford a bit more he would have had square taper spindle and cranks to fit. So equipping it would be entirely period consistent, as @mrandmrspoves has said. Retrobike is possible source (of either).

It shouldn't be that hard to find 46t Raleigh chainsets and Raleigh were as good quality ways as anything else back in the day. They turn up regularly on Ebay but often go for what I would consider silly money.

It might be worth doing a round of the local charity shops, church jumble sales or whatever and picking up a complete bike for a fiver. It can happen.

Some good leads here. Thanks everyone :okay:

There's a regular bike jumble run by a gentleman in Lancashire under the original Clarion banner. There are loads of old chaps there selling the very thing you need for small money.

Yes, Whalley was on 20 March. What I meant to suggest was: why not email Mr Jepson and ask if he knows of anybody with a set to sell?

I ended up getting the degreaser, brass brush and tinfoil out to the original, after going at the rusty old pedals with release spray and a plumbers blowtorch!

Here's the result:

I've got it back on the bike, but the left crank is twisted from a crash, so am trying to replace that now.

Have bought one from a LBS but the cotterpin won't go all the way through. Will try filing but may end up back there to see if a I can swap.
