Where do I get a new spoke from?

Having just put together my studded tyres, I've just found that one of the spokes has broken on the front wheel (rather surprising for a bike that hasn't been ridden for 6 months).

Is it a case of taking the wheel to a bike shop or can I get hold of a spoke anywhere?

I was hoping to use the bike on Monday

You are going to have to go to a bike shop to get a replacement spoke in time. Mail order would take too long and only bike shops are going to stock spare spokes. It is a question of who has the right spoke in stock and whether or not you get them to fit it for you. If it is a bog-standard spoke type and length then most bike shops will have them. If you have some unusual wheels with exotic flat-bladed spokes, they might be harder to come by. If your wheels are a common type, then a bike shop owner would probably be able to tell you over the phone if they can help you, otherwise you'd probably have to take the wheel to them.

Oh, and of course, the shop has to be open on Sunday - good luck with that!

Pretty much as I thought.

None of the bike shops round here open Sundays.

Oh well, I'll now go back to checking the mtb over - it's just a shame I've actually finally finished my DIY studded tyres and both my 700c rimmed bikes are out of action.

I suppose the only other thing you can do is to appeal to local CycleChatters for a suitable spare spoke. I'm not sure how many CC members are in Cumbria - not too many, I imagine, but it might be worth a go.

Are this lot open Sundays?

Give um a ring in the morning

No they're not. They do have a fetching red tourer with ripped bar tape and a twisted round shifter in for a service at the moment though.

That's my usual LBS and I'll be calling in on them next week. I was there this afternoon to have a chat with them about my other bike. If I'd noticed the spoke earlier I'd have sorted it then.

I've got a perfectly serviceable hardtail that will be ok for commuting. I'm just a little annoyed that I decided to make 700c spiked tyres instead of 26" ones and then both my 700c wheeled bikes go out of service.

Actually I do have a rear wheel spare for that bike (waiting for me to get round to rebuilding the hub). It's the pair for the front so I may have a look at that one.

Thanks for the help everyone. The spokes in the "spare" wheel were the same length as the front ones so the wheel is sorted

Now I can play with the studded tyres in the snow tomorrow!
