Where can I buy an old fashioned three speed bike. I hate mountain and modern road bikes with their 21 gears and alloy wheels etc. I want a good old fashioned three speed bike with steel rimmed wheels and old style caliper brakes one like this: Click here

Try these

Not cheap though, but you're getting a hand built British bike that will last decades.

Guv'nor 3 speed would be my choice, 531 tubes etc...

And fairly new to the game, these guys. Sorry, chaps:

There was an old 531 raleigh SA 3speed locked up at the same railing for several weeks that I used to ride past regularly. Left a note in the spokes asking if the owner would be interested in selling. Noticed the note still there several days later so thought about reporting it to the council as abandoned and see if I could nab it!

Rode past it yesterday, and noticed the wheels had gone  Some people will nick anything.

I have a 1950's roadster for sale, look in the 'for sale' heading under Humber roadster, I believe I even posted some pictures of it. Regards, Goldfangf

With the money that you'd spend on a decent three-speed, you'd be better off getting a hybrid.

If gears are not your thing, get a hybrid with only a rear derallieur.

For shopping and commuting, I have one of these: http://www.feltbicyc...s/X-City-6.aspx

It has only eight gears, is very easy and cheap to look after and for the money it is lighter, stronger and more manoeuvrable than a three-speed which has the weird bars and frame geometry, etc.

I stuck riser bars on it because I wanted a more upright riding position.

Plus, you can't easily bunny-hop a three speed.

How about something like this? Don't know anything about them - there were quite a few others - just googled 'traditional bicycle'.

p.s. Steel rims are not good - brakes don't work - some innovations are worth having even for traditionalists!

Steel rims will last forever though. The modern alloy rims will get worn out eventually by the brake pads, meaning a very expensive wheel replacement. Plus they are not half as strong as steel rims. I noticed this myself when carrying heavy loads it makes the spokes break. I had this problem on a bike I had a few years ago. Plus they buckle easily too.

Nothing wrong with the traditional three speed. I love the ones I have and they will still be going long after the carbon framed wonder bikes have bit the dust, and they will do so with nothing more than a few drips of oil every weeks.

Just make sure you get one with cable brakes as these will stop fine with the right pads. The rod brakes on my Rudge are terrifying.

Absolute rubbish............sorry.

Steel rims are lethal for braking and aren't stronger - reason spokes snap is badly built wheels. You can specify all sorts of alloy rim - why do you think all World Tour riders still use alloy rims.
