so for example
I dismantle my chainset for some cleaning
Do I put anything on the nuts that I then screw back together?
I was thinking WD40 - but I reckon you will give me some other codes.
I think the question is this
What do I put on stuff that is not to move and what do I put on stuff that is supposed to move after cleaning it?
I know it is a simple question, but your expertise if welcomed.
I am about to buy some tools and possibly got into places I only knew as a child taking apart my Eddy Mercyx

WD40 is probably the last thing you want to use, there has been plenty of threads on its lack of lubrication properties. If I take anything apart when I put it back together I tend to use grease, at the moment I'm using lithium grease.

Copper grease for screw threads, I've always used it the motorbike as I use it all year round. It's made for that so I see no better thing. Only need tiny amounts tho.

WD40 won't hurt on the chainring bolts....they don't need lubrication. But I always use a good-quality bike-specific (and therefor probably overpriced) grease for all re-assembly jobs.

Vasaline works fine, copper slip is good but can be pricey, I avoid white grease as it seems to make seizing worse if it's left between steel and aluminum.

Some people spend silly money on threadlock but there aren't that many places where you really need it.

Be careful with those hollow chainring bolts, it they're alloy they can break easily.

Copperslip. A tube costs a couple of pounds and lasts forever.
I've rarely needed threadlock on a bike - only to bodge things together if I've cross-threaded sommat-or-other.

On it's own it's not persistant enough for metal on metal use, the crystals in it can cause scoring and wear as well if used as a lube under great load.

What it is very good for though is the inside of shifters with plastic on plastic movment.

Take care not to get grease on the outside of the outside half of the hollow chainring bolts, otherwise you may have problems with them just spinning instead of tightening properly.

Completely agree. The only grease you need on a bike.
