When to replace cleats

I've got a set of M424 pedals and a pair of shoes with recessed cleats - look like trainers and easy to walk in.

Recently (in the last 2-3months) I've found that I occassionally get a squeeking noise from the right pedal. I can usually get it to stop, either by wiggling my foot around within the allowed float of the pedal or by unclipping and reclipping on the other side of the pedal.

I suspect this is the rubber on the sole of the shoe rubbing on the pedals cage - but it didn't used to do this.

Is it time to replace the cleats? Do I need to adjust the pedals (and how)?

I've been using this set of cleats for about a year, maybe ~8000 miles. How long would you expect a set of cleats to last?

If you've had them a while and you're having problems or they look worn then change them. Usually when they're worn they release too easily. Best way is too compare them visually with some new ones - remember though that the bits that matter are the bits next to the sole of the shoe not the bottom.
