You really need to either buy a chain checker or learn how to measure stretch with a ruler (instructions on the internet).
I thinks its accepted that a chain checker tends to exaggerate the actual wear due to measuring roller to roller instead of pin to pin...but that works in your favour. A worn chain according to a chain checker isnt as worn as you think. So if you replace the chain with that method, you'll extend the life of your cassette and chainrings. Thats what ive found anyway.
105, veloce, sram, I found them all much of a muchness, they all last more or less the same (I used to monitor them for lifespan)
