Hi

I can lift the chain where it goes round the front (large) gear, I guess I need a new chain (though I'm not getting any jumping), is it ok to replace just the chain - how do I tell if the front or rear sets need doing too?

Thanks

depends on how worn you let your chain get.

see

I'd advise a chain cheacker, you'll know if your rear casette needs replacing if after a new chain the chain jumps (usually on the smallest cog), the front well it will look worn - asymmetrical teeth (sharks teeth) if really bad

Hi

Thanks very much for that, gives me a good idea what to look for.

I'll measure the chain on, as per the link, and if its stretched more than 1/16" replace the chain, and see how it runs. Don't think the chain ring (front) is bad, will have a close look just to check, then see if it starts jumping (hasn't been to date), replace the back set if it does.

Just had a call, bike is ready for collection (had brake and gear change cables lubed, new tyres, headset sorted and a general service), told them to leave the chain etc, as it wasn't causing me grief at the sec, so we'll see.

If I do need to buy bits, where's the most cost effective place to go?
There seems to be a huge difference in prices round here (Cambridge), and very hard to assess whether paying more means you get better quality ...

Simplest thing to do is buy a chain checker and replace when it says so. That'll prolong the life of your gears and cassette.

The other way you can go is to replace nothing! Run the chain until it stops working. By the time this happens both your front gears and cassette will be so worn you'll have to replace the whole lot but it will probably take years and so may work out cheaper!
