When the wind just is'nt fun !!!

The one that gets me is the anti-tow wind. Near us is a railway crossing on a busy road. When the barriers go up you've got a stream of traffic coming towards you and then suddenly a headwind they are towing hits you.

Think of it as resistance training:

Imagine a still day. You are pottling along on your bike, loving the blue sky, bright sun and colours in the fields/parks. You arrive at work fresh, full of energy, and happy with life.
On the other hand, your heart, lungs and leg muscles have been getting bored. They are planning some tricks against you, or at the very least, they are sitting together, playing cards, and not putting on bulk or refinement. They have been living the life of Riley, and scrounging off the benefits stored already.

Alternatively, its a windy day. Every turn of the pedals has been hard work. The sun may have been shining, and the flowers may have been particularly beautiful, but your eyes were fixed on the horizon that appeared to be refusing to move towards you. Every turn of the crank was painful, and every breath deep and quick.
However your heart, lungs and leg muscles have now been shaken out of their "Easy Life", have just remembered that they have a part to play in your fitness, and are hard at work building themselves up fibre-by-fibre. They are finally earning their keep - doing what they were designed to do.

That's exactly the way you need to think is'nt it........unfortunately i've always been a bit thick !

Went out for a ride this morning, did'nt really have any detailed plan really just thought i'd do 25 miles or so....until i got out of our street & headed west into a massive (well it certainly felt like that) headwind which just absolutely drained me almost straight away, but i did manage almost 18 miles until i collapsed back through my front door
Living literaly 400yds from the beach on the Northumberland coast meant obviously i could'nt head east (& stay dry) so my options direction wise are always limited....anyway i find the wind kills me alot more than hills...& a headwind going up climbs is just cruel
Do other people struggle in the wind or is it just me being a Wuss ??

Nope - it's almost always a head wind and we all struggle (some just don't own up to it!)

My OH and I cycled up to North Cape (far north of Norway) last year, it was a head wind all the way. the 2 weeks we cycled across the top of Norway to the Barent's sea/Russian border, it was a headwind (except for 2 days where it was such a bad side wind staying on the road was almost impossible and only pushing the bike was feasible for several hours). Once we headed south, the wind swung round and low and behold was a head wind almost the entire way to Athens! I say almost because we had a really enjoyable day in Slovakia where we could hold 30kph without cycling on the flat - massive tailwind, anything other than one direction was impossible.

When we commented on this to a German cyclist whilst in the lower halves of Finland, he had noticed exactly the same phenomena....

I have come to the conclusion that the only tail wind I will get will be on the turbo trainer with a big fan behind me!

I'm really happy to hear so many replies just to confirm its not just me feeling the 'burn' in the wind ha ha (not that i want everyone else to struggle too....honest)

I've just come back from a little 14 miles before i need to get off to work, managed 15.7mph ave. which is on the faster side for me, so i'm putting that down to my 'resistance training' from yesterday.......phew i feel a bit better now

I seem to be stuck between 12 and 12.5mph and can't get any faster  Even although it was cold this morning, I was breaking a sweat and puffing and blowing so it's not that I'm not trying! It's getting a bit disheartening. I know it's only really been a month but I thought my speed would have risen a wee bit.

It will this is a list of my data by month, after a month I was only doing an avg of 12.07mph slower at the beginning faster at the end.
month figures.JPG

My avg is all over at the mo but usually works out to be about 14 at the end of the week.
I was just like you after a month just keep going.
The avg time is riding time, because some of those early rides took a damn sight longer than 2 hrs.
