Maybe its just me, but I always seem to find that the wind does drop dramatically (on many occasions) at night.

So, I think I've solved my own problem.

Go for a bike ride late at night !!!!

Yea it does often, about sunset it slackens off, but not always, its the same principle as off shore and on shore winds during the day and night, though its usually more noticeable on the coast.

One of the longer stretches of road that I ride will sometimes actually have a tailwind. I will notice riding is feeling good and my speedometer is up a lot. The problem is I never realize it is a tailwind until I have ridden an extra five miles because I feel so strong. I then turn around to come back up the same road. The wind will blast me in the face  and I think...what have I done.

I am trying to be more observant now and if I am going 15 mph or so, and am not hearing much wind noise, I will keep the return part in mind. But most days it seems like a headwind in both directions.

I knew a model aircraft flyer and he once told me ' if the wind is out of the west it'll go down with the sun.'

it seems to be mostly true and holds for south to westerleys

but yes I did a 40miler on Sunday the return leg into wind was a bit cruel even downhill slopes were no fun.

Went out for a ride this morning, did'nt really have any detailed plan really just thought i'd do 25 miles or so....until i got out of our street & headed west into a massive (well it certainly felt like that) headwind which just absolutely drained me almost straight away, but i did manage almost 18 miles until i collapsed back through my front door
Living literaly 400yds from the beach on the Northumberland coast meant obviously i could'nt head east (& stay dry) so my options direction wise are always limited....anyway i find the wind kills me alot more than hills...& a headwind going up climbs is just cruel
Do other people struggle in the wind or is it just me being a Wuss ??
winds horrible cycled work on monday afternoon all the way in a headwind.although its hard i found it dangerous being blown all over the place.put road bike away since and now on my big heavy mountain bike.lot slower and a lot safer

I was advised that the top cycling stars liberally apply silicon lubricant all over their bodies on windy days. This makes the wind just slide over them and makes for appreciably faster speeds. I can't find anywhere round here selling silicon lubricant, do you think Marks & Spencers jars of Goose Fat would be an acceptable substitute?

Wind will die off when the sun goes down, the sun is the cause of weather systems.

I hate the wind nearly as much as I do the rain.
Whenever we cycle to Gretna it always feels as though we're fighting a headwind, until we turn to come back and really are fighting a head wind!
It's particularly unfair when you struggle up a hill, almost get blown off at the top and then have to battle your way down too.

A couple of days ago I did a 12 mile ride up river from Lancaster full into the wind. All the way there I was thinking, 'at least it'll be easy going back'. I rode all the way home with the wind full in my face thinking, 'it used to do that coming back from school too.'

I think you complain too much.
You omit to tell us the river current was in your favour on the way home.

A couple of days ago I did a 12 mile ride up river from Lancaster full into the wind. It brought back memories of rides to school when I was 14. (Yes, I do have a good memory!) All the way there I was thinking, 'at least it'll be easy going back'. I rode all the way home with the wind full in my face thinking, 'it used to do that coming back from school too.'

That's why winds are classified as Againsterlies in the cycling vocabulary.
