When does a Cassette need a Shim?

Ive just been servicing a MTB for my Brother in law and had problems setting the Rear Deraileuer up then I noticed that the Cassette has a definate rock in it (Play that you can hold the cassette by the largest sprocket and rock it back and forth roughley about 1/2 a MM) So I presume I need a shim behind the cassette? as I have tightened the lock ring up as far as it will go. any ideas where I might get one any body? Please

You can get spacers from the likes of wiggle, I had a hg50 cassette that had a small shim between 15 and 13 cogs, are you sure this is not missing.

This was between the locking ring 13th and the rest of the cassette. What cassette is it, mind you I am probably not the best person to ask as I strip 8sp's and use individual cogs as I want.

hi Nigel Its a 9 speed 11-34 Shimano Deour? on a Halfords Carrea Kracen bike I'm not sure that it would have been the standard cassette when the bike was new, I will have to go and do a bit of research. All I know is that everything that could be loose was and It was bought 2nd hand so It needed some TLC! It goes a little better now but I would like to get it 100% if I can.

Been trying that with my Viking for over a year

There are two types

This has a spacer

Just wonder of things have been mixed up at all, not by you but a previous owner.

I noticed my ultegra cassette would move in and out a very tiny bit when I was giving the wheel a good cleaning. I also had another wheel I had just cleaned and it was not moving at all. I took it off and discovered I had not put the very small spacer on the hub before I put the cassette on. I am pretty sure a new spacer did not come with the cassette when I bought it. The spacer from the old cassette had stuck to the hub side of the big cog, so I just took it off, cleaned it and used the spacer from the old cassette. It doesn't move now. However I rode without it for about 1000 miles and never noticed it while riding. It seemed to work ok but I feel better now that the small amount of play is gone.

Don't over tighten the cassette trying to get the play out.

I have never seen (this is not to say that it is never the done thing) a spacer in between the smallest cog and the lockring on a cassette. The smallest cog and the lockring are serated and lock together IME. A spacer behind the cassette is common though.

Since standard cassette hubs don't require any special spacer for 9 speed cassettes, chance is the previous owner had been messing with your cassette sprockets or spacers. The whole stack should stick out by a couple of mm outboard the freehub to allow the lock ring to bite on the serrated surface of the 11T sprocket real tight. You might be able to find out what is going on by checking to see if the sprockets are all 4.35mm apart.
