What "spares" is he expecting to have to fit ?
Spokes maybe ?
Both use fancy straight-pull spokes (rather than the conventional J-shaped ones), so not much in it in terms of spares availability in my book.
Alternatively get some decent handbuilt wheels which are far less likely to need replacement spokes, and if they do, are available in stock in any LBS.

I got caught up in the whole "Need better wheels" thing , to put on my Scott road bike.
They come with Alexs Race 28 wheels and all the write ups say they are awfull, so it led me to believe i must upgrade although i didn't actualy know why.
I got a set of Mavic Open Pro wheels and put them on ,, they felt slower and numb , i put my crap Alex wheels back on and they feel far smoother , they have done 3 years of riding and are still dead true and smooth , no spokes broke and i am happy as can be.

Sold the Mavic wheels and got on with riding until i find out why i need better wheels.
