Hi im new to this sort of thing, just wondering if i can change tires on my Trek utopia? it has 700cx38, bontrager, am i able to put thinner ones on the same rims, if so how thin would you suggest?

you should be able to , but you need to check what size the rims are to see how much narrower you can go

If they are the 18mm versions you can go down to 28mm safely and may even be able to get away with 25mm, but that may be pushing it. As biggs682 says, check your inner rim size.

This is the page that gives you the full works on tyre sizing.... you can ignore most of it except the little diagram next to chapter headed "BSD" and the red and green shaded table near the bottom of the page.

Is there any marking to allow the identification of the inner rim width without removing the tyre?

Not on mine. If you have a vernier you can just deflate the tyre and measure the rims without taking the tyre off. Other wise just take it to a bike shop and ask them to do it.
