First I should say I'm totally new to all aspects of these bikes!

Need some advice on buying some wheels for my 1st restoration project, looking on ebay to buy some wheels this avo and it's pretty clear I have no idea what's going on.

I have some wheels that came with the bike when it was donated to me but I'm not sure whether to buy a new set or just some new tubes & tires?

Advice would be blooming lovely. The ref on the bike is #WL9000716 S - dunno if that's any good for telling you guys/gals what works on it.

we need pics please !

the original wheels will or should be 700c and a quick spoke re tension and fresh grease along with checking they spin nice and true should still be ok once decent tubes and tyres fitted .

if you are feeling really brave i have some sprints and tubs which wouldnt look out of place

the wl means bike was built in Worksop and once the numbers sequence comes back to me should be able to say month and year but @Spokesmann will say for sure

re WL9000716 S i think if i am right

W = Worksop built
L = month built = December
9 = Year made ie 1979 , for some strange reason they only use the last number in the decade
716 = 716th bike made although this bit might be wrong

Nice one biggs. I'll hold fire before buying any.

How the frigg do I post photos? Will it have to be off the internet via a URL? Normally I'd just insert file but I can't find the option...

Thanks very much for the reply - much appreciated.

You can't post pics yet as you are a very new member.
Until you can, (which doesn't take that many posts). link a url to the wheels.

Check the spokes haven't corroded on the original wheels. If they are okay, ask your local bike shop to service the hubs with fresh bearings and grease, and you should be fine.

If the wheels need replacing, I would look on eBay or Gumtree for a wheelset with Campagnolo hubs and 126mm rear spacing. On the Pro Am 12 the distance between the rear dropouts is 126mm. More modern bikes are 130mm. That's good news since there are some bargains to be had if you are looking for wheelsets with 126mm rear hubs (Campag Record hubs laced to Mavic GP4's for tubs or any Mavic or Ambrosio clincher rim. Mavic Open Pro rims and Mavic 501 hubs are good, too.)

Well I never made it to the shop but that helped me decide to just give em a rub down and buy some tyres. I'm moving house and skint so I'll have to go for the cheapest option!
