Sorry, complete noob here...

I have a Gary Fisher mountain bike that I've had for many years since new and it came with 26x1.75 knobbly tyres, but have now signed up for a long distance road ride (60 miles, long to me anyway).

I've been looking at slicks to reduce the rolling resistance, but not sure what sizes are appropriate for the wheels I have. Is it possible to fit 26x1.6 or 26x1.3 tyres (looking at Conti sport contact) on these wheels? or do I have to find a slick tyre that is 26x1.75?

Thanks for any advice.

Basically it depends on rim width, but most mtb wheels would take down to 1.5" tyres quite easily. I'd imagine the 1.3" ones would probably fit as well.

Slick tyres do make a massive difference to rolling resistance, when I switched my knobblies to slicks my mtb felt like a different bike. Do remember to pump whatever tyres you have up as high as you can and lock out any suspension on the road if possible, and enjoy the ride

The Conti Sport Contacts are good tyres, I have some on my tourer at the moment and I'm very happy with them. Other options avaliable also include Michelin Citys and Schwalbe City Jets.
