Wheel into apartment?

I just recently started bike riding again, and I live in an apartement. It is frustrating to have to wheel in my bike (on my clean carpet) everytime I want to go bike riding. Especially after it rains, my wheels get really dirty. I don't have any safe way of leaving it outside. Just wondering what other bikers living in apartments do? Especially if you have kids with bikes too.

Put down some cut-to-size plastic matting which grips the carpet or some cheap doormats - they're usually found next to each other in Homebase.

I lived in a rented apartment with carpets for a while. I used to place clear plastic envelopes with unopened career mags inside under the wheels and I never had a problem, got my deposit back 4 years later OK.

My current flat has hardwood floors so it doesn't really matter.

There's a garage with our flat - something about room for a small car and 6 bikes that kind of clinched the deal for me

Don't be tempted to leave it out, we hear too many stories of bikes being nicked from landings and communal areas in flats.

Luckily there is room for my day to day bike to live in the hallway downstairs, and my off season bike lives in the flat, just leaning againt the sideboard. If I need to do any maintenance, I'll bung newspapers down...

my ex's flat has a communcal bike store which is handy as I don't think many fo the residents use it so he can get the boys bikes in there too if necessary.

How about buying a cheap strip roll of vinyl flooring as an off cut to line the hall way. You would only need enough to form a runner.

I remember that clear plastic runners were available once, the type with a ribbed top surface and tiny spikes to grip the carpet underneath.

Either will keep the muck off the carpet and give you a chance to get the bikes in doors.

I live in a flat but we have a communal bike store. Thing is I was worried about security over night so I spoke to our apartment management company and agreed I would manage the bike store on behalf of residents. I invested in a massively secure lock, covered up the open gates with PVC boards so people couldnt see inside and put up a noticeboard. If people want a key I charge a tenner deposit and get all their details... now there is a few of us using it and we all leave messages for each other. Because we all know that only registered key holders have access it makes people less nervous!
