With the rear wheel on my bike I spin it and it looks like the wheel is buckled or the spindle is bent.

But I take off the tyre and innertube and spin it and there is no buckle.

Is it possible for a tyre to stretch in a single area and make the wheel look buckled?

Your tyre is not seated right (or its a cheap tyre) which is making it look that way

ok have checked the tyre and it looks fine. Half deflated the tube and checked all around and it all looks seated fine.

The strange thing is i'm sure the wheel was fine before I changed innertube, but have been told that an innertube could not cause this in a single spot. :S

i'll run to halfords tomorrow and grab a tyre to check. I wanted to change these knobblys for X-country ones anyway so this is a good time to do that and see.

Edit: I dont suppose there is a trick for checking that the tyres are seated correctly?

thanks for the quick response.

please try someplace else for the tyre if you can, halfords are really not cheap when it comes to tyres.

a friend of mine bought a 20inch tyre for his son's bike from halfords and then soon after bought a second "identical" tyre from the LBS for half the price.

Check the space between the rim and the brake blocks with the tyre on and inflated, while gently rotating the wheel. If it fluctuates its out of true if this is static but the look of the wheel is wobbly, I'd be inclined to agree with Spandex's theory of dodgy tyres.

cant check brake blocks as this is a disc wheel.

Tomorrow i'll mark where it is and move the tyre round. I assume if its the wheel the wobble will still be where the wheel mark is...if not it will be where the tyre mark is.

i'll see if I can find a LBS to by the tyre

washing up liquid

would it help if I put a little soapy water around the edge of the wheel before I put the tyre on?

You should be able to check using the frame as a reference point - blue tack a pencil or similar (or use your finger) and watch as the rim passes it.

AFAIK you won't need a specific tyre just because it's going on a front, or rear wheel (the exception to this is some high end road tyres, like Continental's "Force" and "Attack" tyres, which are (supposedly) front and rear specific.
