Probably an old question but cup and cone vs cartridge? specifically 105 vs novatec classic

Open pro vs rigida sputnik/chinra vs exal lx17

Getting some handbuilts and weighing up my options....

cup and cone vs cartridge? 105 are nice. Hope Pro III (cartridge) are MUCH better IMHO - although more expensive. Not tried the Novatec though.
Open pro vs rigida sputnik/chinra vs exal lx17 ? Not tried the Sputnik or the Exal. Not keen on the Chrina, built one set and found it can be a bit of a mare to get tyres on and off. Open Pro is lighter, easy to remove & refit tyres but more expensive. It's also fantastically strong for such a light rim - I've taken mine over stony tracks on the SDW (shod with 30mm CX tyres) and they coped fine. Downside is the brake track wears out quickly.
Consider as alternatives... Ambrosio Excellence (not that many sellers around, try Sam Cycling if you can't find them) or DT Swiss RR465 - both of which I've found to be very good, or Rose Bikes' R490 (not tried yet) which looks suspiciously like a 36 hole version of the RR465, but at a significantly lower cost.

If you are not used to cup and cone I would definitely go for the sealed bearing option.

The only problem is - don't overdo the preload on sealed bearings as they will wear out very quickly.
