Just want to make sure I've got my calculations right:

Halo Excite-R 700c rim, 32 hole, website gives the Effective Rim Diameter as 588mm. I'm presuming there's 0mm OSB, or have I got this wrong?

Shimano Deore XT Center Lock HB-M775 front hub - from Edd spoke length calculator: left flange 44mm, right flange 40mm, centre to left 24.8mm, centre to right 35.8mm, spoke hole 2.4mm

Going to be building with a 2-cross pattern, and Edd gives left spoke length as 278.8mm and right spoke length as 281.3mm.

So if I buy 16x279mm spokes and 16x281mm spokes (plus a couple of spares) I'm good to go?

Or should I take the hub and rim into the shop and get them to measure it?

You lost me in the second sentence so if it was me I would just go to the LBS and buy a wheel but then I would miss out on the pleasure of riding on something I had put together and the satisfaction that must bring. I can't help you with your question but good luck with it!

Ha! I know what you mean. Most of the measurements came out of the spoke calculator website - you put in the name of your hub and rim and it tells you what spoke lengths you need. Only I'm not entirely sure what an OSB is - I think it's when the rim isn't symmetrical, but I'm pretty sure mine is so it should be zero.

I think the term wheel 'building' puts people off - it's more like stringing and tuning a guitar than anything else.

Yes, you would be fine with that - 279mm as a first choice and 278mm as a second choice.

Grand, thank you. Have looked online for spokes, but will probably just go to LBS to save accidentally buying the wrong stuff.

Wheel strung up, just need to true it now.

One thing I've come across that I've not seen mentioned anywhere is accidentally dropping nipples into the inside of a double walled rim, and then having to shake the wheel around to get them back out again. This might just be me, but if it's not, thread a spoke a tiny bit through the wrong end of the nipple (e.g. from the screwdriver end) and then use that to guide it into the hole. Once it's in place, unscrew the spoke and switch it for the screwdriver, and thread the spoke as normal
