I am trying to get my sons trail bike back on the road and got new ball bearings, QR axle and cones to keep the wheel going for just a while longer.
When I fitted the bearings and axle into the hub I now find that the overall length of the cones is shorter that the old ones and when in position both ends are inside the hub and I can't get a spanner on the flats to accurately lock them in position.
Does anyone know where I can get hold of a pair of cones?
They all seem to be different and there are a lot of variations.

Basic question: Are the new bearings the same size as the old ones?

Sounds like you've missed off a spacer or two. When you stripped the old axle down there should have been cone and locknut on one side, which should be tightened up to each other, then on the other side a cone, a spacer, a washer and a locknut ( at least. Some have more)

Last time I serviced my front hub it worked out much cheaper to buy an entire hub (deore) and take the parts off I needed. Then applied the same logic for a set of Shimano brake blocks (Deore V brake set for a tenner).
