What's your 'too far' now?

You know, the distance you look at to somewhere, be it whilst on holiday or to an event/family gathering from your house, and you say "I'd love to cycle but that's too far". I know it depends a lot upon the nature of the event, i.e. going to a wedding reception 25 miles away is far more practical in a car as you can go dressed in what you'd wear, so assuming you can go in your cycling kit, what's your too far. Currently, purely for time's sake as much as anything, if it was much further than 40 miles I'd think twice.

Ending up at a wedding after a 25 mile ride is not a good idea at all^_^+how exactly would you cycle for 25 comfly with a(assuming you wear one to a wedding) suit:scratch: ,but you could go there and change and.....oh,forget it,just get in the car already .
 Hmmmmmmm, thing is if you don't exactly want to go there........

Mine too is the 25 mile mark right now and no,i'm not planning to ride to a wedding(or any other such event for that matter)but if i werent interested in it,I'd bike there:biggrin:

My in laws live in Coventry which is 86 miles from us in west london . At the moment it's too far, but i have it as an aim.
Bringing the bike back is no issue as a few of us are always going back and forth

As long as I breathe, I attack.
100 miles is to far atm, maximum i have ever done in 1 ride with a cake stop is 76 and i was fecked, had to take kid to the park afterwards as well .......Too fast is another thing as well as last year i was just about ready for the fast group on the club run but fitness is down this year what with a new sprog etc so the medium pace runs are about all i have oomph for .

At the moment I think 70 or maybe 80 would be the absolute limit for me.. they would need to be relatively flat miles as well
I just did a 52 miler this weekend and felt pretty good to do another 20 or 30 ( I didn't though ! )

I don't think (within reason) I'd say any distance was too far but instead too time consuming.
+1
20 mile commute is too far, i work 10 hour shift and to add 40 miles per day cycling is just not on for me.

Leisure cycling is another matter and yet it has its constraints....namely the other half .
Personally i cant be at work all week, then happily disappear off all day cycling at the weekend, so that limits my mileage. I'll do up to 4 hours max, thats going to be maybe 60 miles. More often than not, i'll do a few quick one hour sprints over the week, rather than long distance.

There again, i hate the thought of setting off for a 60 miler....i baulk at the thought, yet i'll often set out on a day to myself (and thats rare) and just cycle...i dont have a plan, just ride till i think ive had enough. That may be 30 miles...it has been 82 miles.

+1 the limiting factor is time

Oaf on a Bike
It depends a lot on weather, hills etc. A couple of weeks ago in the heat at lunchtime my normal 30 miler was too far. Most ive done so far is about 55miles, but I imagine if i had a lunch stop and split the ride 70-80 would be okay.

On my own I tend to do 40-50 milers and find that enough. Went out recently with five others from a local cycling forum and managed 114 miles over the day. That did include a lunch stop and a couple of breaks to check out scenery or things of intrest. What a huge difference it makes to cycle in a group.

As for getting somewhere, I don't really like taking the bike.
A) I don't like riding it without all the gear :becool:and my pedals are useless for anything but clipless (and my cycling shoes don't exactly go with my relaxed clothing style!
B) Can't do my hair, and if I do the helmet/wind ruins it
C) Don't like leaving it locked up

Having said all that, I used to ride 6 miles each way to uni perfectly happily. Sometimes taking the long way, usually around a 20 mile round trip.
At home though, its impossible. They say Anglesey is flat, the short 25% and 30% inclines (or 20% for just over 1km) to my house don't agree! It's not even an option to go for a short 5 miler without getting a bit smelly

Going for a general ride, I'll happily do 50/60 hilly miles on my own.
I usually go for shorter blasts though, 10 miler racing against my self. Not a fan of long rides by my self, feels a bit lonely!
