what's happened to my chain..?

bought a NOS 5speed chain for the new Peugeot
wider than the old one

i noticed on the old chain - every inner link was bulged [sp] out
.


I'm guessing a narrow 5/6/7 chain had been fitted
just wondered what you think.?

Ed --- the bike is immaculate - signs of regular maintenance etc

Foss--- freewheel in good condition ..no probs running with old chain but the NOS chain is wider - and chattering

i am sure it's a compatibility prob with the wider NOS chain
it is a 14-28T 5speed Maillard [France]............tooth thickness is 2.22mm
which is prob the reason the narrow inner links are distorted --- see OP

my Shimano 20T removal socket doesn't fit
guess i need a Maillard tool.?

anyone with a Shimano 14-28 5speed freewheel...?
what's the tooth thickness..?

Manufacturer is Shimano, pretty sure about this but will check again asp. Actually got 2 different wheelsets for that bike, with a 5 speed freewheel for each.
At first glance, your freewheel seems a bit smaller in diameter than mine.

it's stamped ''Maillard - Made in France'' ---- so original i believe

luckily it is what i wanted at 14 - 17 - 20 - 24 - 28
rather than the 14-24

must stop polishing and goto bed..................

Pat...........chain arrived today
cut to length and fitted with the supplied link ..........easy
chain runs sooooo smooth --and very quiet too
so THANKS for the tip

still have no idea why the one originally fitted had deformed inner links ...
made a chain whip from the ''too wide'' new NOS chain

new Bontrager saddle came too, so just waiting for brake/gear cables..............................

its a Peugoet trait i think its to stop the rear wheel going to far back in the drop outs , similar to the thin screws on a good quality 531 frames
