im doing my first 110 mile ride this sunday,,,previous furthest is 52 miles,,

any advice on what to eat for breakfast?? at the moment if its a riding day (a 30-40 mile ride) il have porridge with little bit of golden syrup and a banana...

its a 7:00am start,,,do i cram in as much as possible an hour before???
also any suggestions of what food to take with me?my usual is soreen, jam roll or a banana
not big fan of gels,,,the caffeine ones make my HR go sky high and the carb ones induce 'emergency comfort breaks!!'..:biggrin:
I use SIS PSP22 in my water bottle........
I understand that personal preferences are a big part of this and different things suit different people....but any suggestions would be great.....

My first imperial century was completed on a triple boiled egg/double toast breakfast - a couple of gels & oat bars for snacking on and a home made rice/tuna pot as a quick lunch. Those High5 tabs in my water too. Energy levels were never an issue, more like muscle fatigue for the last 15-20 miles.

For a 7am start I would have a largish meal (white pasta) the night before, and then an early breakfast (round 5am) - a massive bowl of muslei or porridge with added honey usually does it for me.

During the ride (race...?), it would probably be best to eat what you know won't make you have digestive problems/feel sick etc. I too find Soreen to work well, but usually take a gel or two (if racing).

Good luck (don't start off too fast ^_^)

It's good that another rider will be there with you - you can draft him/her all the way.

Don't forget to drink loads of water a few days leading up the ride you want to start well hydrated as well as well fed.

And don't forget a couple of beers at the end!

You are on the right track Herzog. Pasta the night before, Porridge and honey for breakfast and then while you are on the ride the rules are -- eat before you get hungry, and drink before you are thirsty. Cereal bars, bananas, jam sandwiches, and drink whilst on the move. Even on a cool day you will sweat a lot without noticing, this fluid has to be replaced.

On long rides of 100 miles + I have a large bowl of pasta the night before. Then it's a large bowl of porridge and a big dollop of golden syrup. On the ride itself I take marmalade sarnies and fruit bars. If a cafe stop is involved thenit's beans on toast and/or a large slice of cake. I tend to drink water on the move but often buy an isotonic drink or coke here and there.

For a really long ride I like some real food, like cheese and tomato or turkey and tomato sandwiches, cut up nice and small so you can get one piece over in a couple of bites. Lots of water or isotonic drink and the occasional energy bar should get you home ok if you have preloaded with carbs before the run. I find too much sweet stuff gets very sickly and gels are a last resort if you are struggling near the end of the ride.

This probably won't go down well with the serious athletes among us but during a long ride I find chocolate cake for energy and crisps to replace the lost salt work wonders for me.

Agreed on that - last sportive I just felt ill from too much sweet stuff (flapjacks, biscuits & energy drinks/gel) on the go. Was craving savoury stuff so badly by the end- ate a whole 14" pizza to celebrate my finish! :hungry:
