any reason behind going to halfords?

you will get a better bike for your money if you go elsewhere, just looking at the evans site and checking the hybrids for under 350, they look better.

+1

And also check your LBS's as they may have some good bikes in that range.

Well the nearest evans to me is manchester and I don't trust building the bike myself if I order it. My nearest LBS only sells top of the range MTB and the next LBS is really expensive. That only leaves me with Halfords ;)

Halfords are infamous for the varying quality of their bike set-ups. Some are fine, some are put together in a manner that at best can be described as poor, at worst un-roadworthy and downright dangerous.

Go to a decent LBS, and tell them what your budget is. They should be able to find summat for you. There's a thread with Liverpool LBS recomendations here.

Thanks Landslide, I might take a trip up to quinns and see what they can offer me. Do you think body weight should be a factor In choosing a bike?

There are some seriously lightweight (and correspondingly pricy) parts available that are recommended for lighter riders only, but at your weight and price range, I'd not worry.
