Just off the bikes you guys recommended, how long will these bikes last if i used it prodominently for commuting to work and the odd ride here and there.

Well, if you commute on it, not long. These bikes are only made to last a few thousand miles, before you throw them in a skip and get a new one.
About a few thousand miles i would think, if you look after it right! Which might mean a year, or maybe just a few months!

Ok, ill put a serious reply now.
They will last a good amount of time, many years if you look after them right, like any other bike.
The obvious stuff that will need replacing after so long is the chain, and cassette if you dont catch chain wear in time.
Tyres will also wear, obviously so they will need replacing, but they will last a good amount of time aswell.
My Giant sCR4(base level giant road bike) i would go through a chain every month, and sometimes a cassette, and i had to have a new set of tyres. Oh, and bar tape.
That bike doesnt get used my now because i ride fixed, but its still fine. Just needs some new bartape to make it look abit better.

With reasonable maintenance, you should be able to pass any of them on to your grandson. Without maintenance? A few years.

I have just got a Trek 1.5 on the C2W scheme. Got the 09 version for £700 but that was so hard to find. If you can find a Spesh allez that would be a good buy but they are rarer than rockin horse dodo.
Good luck.
