What would cause this kind of damage

Just wondering if anyone could tell me what are the likely causes of this damage to my rim. (Shimano r501).

I have no recollection of hitting a pot hole but I was going down hill at the time and braking hard. I think I have cooked the rim and it's warped with the heat when I have applied the brakes.

If that resulted from hitting a pothole, you would have most likely suffered a so-called snake-bite, twin hole puncture at the same time.

Strange, normally pothole damage goes out not in, it looks more like you've hit something than cooked the rim, how worn is the rim?

That looks more like a sharp impact with something, ie hitting a pot hole or a kerb. I doubt very much you would get enough heat in the rims to cause any problems.

Another vote for a pothole from me. I've had it before after tw@tting a sunken manhole, but that said I can't imagine you wouldn't notice, when it happened to me the bang was so loud that I thought the carbon frame I was using had exploded :B)

I was going about 40 at the time down hill. I put the brakes on to bring me down to about 20 and don't remember any loud bangs or clunks.

The damage isn't at the join and they are new, I have only done 80 miles on them in total .

The side with the bigger dent has folded in on itself where the line for rim wear is marked which makes me think it's a dodgy batch.

but if you end up with the wheel going in to a V you could get inwards pothole damage like that.

If it dropped into a crack running parallel to the kerb it could possibly cause that sort of damage, it would be unlikely to cause a bang but should have been felt through the steering.
