Hi
I'm 43 and back to cycling since from my teens (last bike was a ANC Halfords) and just purchased the Giant Defy 1 disc 2016 model and hoping for some advice and recommendations on which upgrades should I buy.
Any advice or recommendations would be greatly appreciated.

If everything is working ok and you have no issues then leave as is. Wait until components wear and need replacing then upgrade if you feel it necessary.

I'm picking up the bike up hopefully this weekend and read some reviews in which they advise to replace the seat as it's uncomfortable and also that the wheels were too heavy so wondered if anyone had opinions on this?

Another vote for as above - with the caveat that;

The tyres supplied on new bikes aren't always great. While the Kendas that were fitted to my Giant SCR2 were very grippy, they suffered unplanned deflation with a regularity that saw me upgrade within 300 miles on the bike.

Similarly, I found the supplied saddle too soft, and changed that within 500 miles or so.

I purchased the bike through the cycle to work scheme so had to be below £1k.
Thanks for the prompt responses guys.

Give the saddle half a dozen decent rides before you pass judgement. If it's unsuitable try a well regarded Charge Spoon for under £20 delivered.
Don't forget padded bib shorts are a must have.

The saddle might be fine for you, everyone is different

As its a commuter bike, mudguards and rack can be a useful additions. Giant do defy specific guards, ask the shop if these fit the disc model. Rack can be fitted with p clips assuming the stats aren't carbon

Or a Madison Flux which is the same saddle but can be bought cheaper

I think with saddles it's a very personal thing.i'm still using the original giant saddle on my defy 2 composite which i have had for eighteen months and it's not too bad.I tried the charge spoon on my previous bike after reading good reviews but i found it painful so i gave it away to my mate.

I heard about the giant specific mudguards but the local giant store said although they work great, the sks race blades work better.

If I had that bike for commuting, I'd keep it as it is and when the time comes, upgrade the wheels. If you get three flats in close succession, then get new tires too, otherwise save your money (for now).
