what tyres? (beginner)

Hi, I have a hybrid bike. It's the subway carrera from halfords. I want to put semi slick tyres on it but also a bit thinner on the width. How thin can I go? Also, which tyres can you recommend that are good and what size and make should I be looking at? I go mainly on road but sometimes go on a light towpath for a couple of miles. I think I need 26inch tyres?
