What type of front derrailleur???

Hello,

I am in the process of pulling together the bits for my first bike built. I want to purchase SRAM bits but I am confused about front derrailleurs as there seem to be two types, Braze on / Band.

What is the difference and which do I need?

Braze on are designed to fasten directly to a fitting "built in" as part of the frame tube. If your frame has screw threaded fitting on the tube you can use a braze on.

Band are held onto the tube with a glorified Jubilee clip which goes round the frame and tightens up. You might have problems with these if your frame is a very unusual size/shape but otherwise should be OK.

You can also buy adapters that allow braze-on mechs to be fitted to frames without brazed-on brackets.

As above, but make sure you get the right FD for the chainrings you put on.
