What Type of Bottom Bracket and Tools?

My son's 15 year old British Eagle mountain bike has play in the crank arms so I am assuming a new bottom bracket is needed.

I had a quick look on the drive side and it seems to come apart with a spline tool. However the spline nut that holds this side of the bottom bracket also seems to be holding a mounting plate for the front derailleur, which seems a bit weird. Has anyone seen this before?

On the non drive side (I didn't remove this crank as I didn't have time), there seems to be a locking ring (a ring with several cut-outs around the outer edge). What tool would I need to remove the part on this side, or will it be the same spline tool?

Is it likely that the bottom bracket is a cartridge type (15 year old MTB) and if so how do I know what size to buy?

I'd like to do the job myself is possible so any advice would be appreciated.

You have a e type front mech, not that uncommon.

If we start with nothing we will need to account for the thickness of the mech plate to deduce which BB to get. But since you have a working albeit worn system you could remove the BB see what it is and buy one with effectively the same spec.

Thanks for the reply Record, I may have a go at stripping it down in the week and see what I find. Do you think I will need two separate tools for each side of the bottom bracket as there appears to be some kind of locking ring on the non-drive side.
