Looks like it might be one of
these. Personally I'd hesitate before taking a chisel to it - it would be quite easy to start breaking off teeth one by one, and you can only lose so many before you've effectively chipped off all your purchase. From the looks of it, someone's already had a go along those lines. When you do get the tool, use it with caution: make sure it's really well seated, don't let it slip, 'rock' the pressure until you feel it start to give. The one thing you want to avoid is stripping more teeth. (Is it possible the reason your Shimano tool won't fit is because of the damage to the teeth? If so, it might be worth trying again, maybe applying a little encouragement with a hammer?)
